Discrete 1-bit architecture with 160 PWM DACs

From industry-leading to surpassing itself—exceeding all previous peaks of performance

The DX340MAX, as the ultimate evolution of the DX340, has been expanded from the original 128 discrete PWM DACs to an impressive 160 PWM DACs. The number of PWM DACs is more than eight times that of other portable devices with discrete DAC architecture. This represents not only a quantitative increase but also stricter requirements for clock accuracy and algorithm control. Through a complete overhaul of the circuit design and optimization of the wiring, the entire DAC achieved a measured THD+N value of up to -122 dB, which is comparable to desktop DACs with 1-bit architecture in the $13,000 price range. For discrete 1-bit architecture, the mountain is high, but the summit has been reached.

FPGA Master 3.0

Collection of in-house developed algorithms

The DX340MAX is equipped with FPGA Master 3.0 technology, which is based on algorithms developed in-house by iBasso over many years. The new FPGA chip features 7.5 times as many LUT logic units as version 2.0.

FPGA-Master 3.0 acts as the main audio controller and retrieves audio data directly from the SoC. It is coupled with two Accusilicon femtosecond oscillators, whose phase noise is -158 dBc/Hz@1kHz, achieving fully synchronized single-clock operation. This enables precise control of the PWM DACs in the picosecond range, minimizes jitter as much as possible, and creates a pure digital audio system that ensures every note is reproduced with precision, clarity, and rich detail.

Leveraging the powerful performance of the new FPGA, the DX340MAX integrates numerous new algorithms for adjusting even and odd harmonics, resulting in rich harmonics and more pronounced sound characteristics. Increasing the even harmonics brings the sound closer to that of a tube amplifier, while increasing the odd harmonics adds more passion and liveliness.

SoC + Audio DSP + FPGA Master 3.0

More Chips. More Focus

Some players implement audio DSP functions to simplify the system and reduce costs by simulating DSP algorithms within the SoC via software decoding. Since the system SoC must run a complex operating system, its real-time performance and system-level jitter are severely compromised. Using the SoC for the “software decoding” of DSP algorithms leads to an inevitable degradation in audio quality.

To fundamentally solve this problem, the DX340MAX is equipped with a dedicated professional-grade audio DSP chip. Thanks to this DSP’s exceptional dynamic range of 192 dB and THD+N of -174 dB, it can achieve perfect audio conversion while significantly reducing the load on the SoC.

At the same time, FPGA-Master 3.0 acts as the main audio controller and independently manages all permissions for audio processing. From a physical architecture perspective, it effectively solves the problem of sound degradation caused by the SoC processing complex operating systems.

Four batteries, two battery management systems

Separate digital/analog power supplies provide an additional improvement in sound quality

The DX340MAX uses four custom-made low-impedance lithium-polymer batteries that support fast charging and discharging and offer superior lifespan and stability compared to conventional lithium-polymer batteries. It features two integrated battery management circuits, with the digital and analog sections powered independently by two separate battery packs. This ensures a stable power supply for the headphone amplifier and effectively isolates electromagnetic interference from the digital section, significantly reducing the degradation in sound quality caused by insufficient power supply.

The analog section is powered by two batteries connected in series, forming an 8.4-V high-voltage battery. Compared to conventional single 4.35-V batteries, this configuration offers a more stable continuous output voltage, greater transient power, lower internal resistance, and fewer losses. The capacity of the power supply directly determines the upper limit of sound quality. The gap between single- and dual-battery power supplies cannot be bridged by circuits or operational amplifiers. Ample current is essential to achieve higher drive and outstanding dynamic performance.

External 12-V DC Power Supply

Patented technology—experience powerful dynamics

The DX340MAX utilizes external 12V DC power supply technology, which has been awarded a national invention patent*. When connected to a 12V power source, the battery power supply is automatically bypassed, with the headphone amplifier being powered directly by the 12V power supply. The headphone amplifier’s operating voltage immediately rises to ±12 V. At this point, DC Super Gain mode can be activated, delivering an output power of up to 2250 mW + 2250 mW at 32 Ω.

Compared to the DX320MAX, which supports only battery operation, the DX340MAX offers both battery and external power supply options, enabling more possibilities and significantly higher output power.

Ultimate Cascaded Current Feedback Circuit

Precise and Masterful Control

A key improvement of the DX340MAX over the AMP18 is the addition of a dedicated differential buffer amplification stage, consisting of two operational amplifiers with a CMRR (Common Mode Rejection Ratio) of up to 120 dB, enabling fully differential transmission. This design effectively reduces noise interference caused by different reference grounds and isolates the influence of the output power of the rear stage on the front stage.

The headphone amplifier features a 4-channel fully differential architecture with a cascaded current-feedback design, which improves latency issues associated with circuits featuring high negative feedback. A total of 80 transistors are employed in a two-stage amplifier structure to ensure linearity during signal amplification. In conjunction with a complementary output circuit, this effectively reduces signal clipping distortion.

Thanks to numerous advanced technologies, the DX340MAX features a balanced output impedance of just 0.9 Ω and an unbalanced output impedance of only 0.4 Ω, allowing it to deliver both powerful dynamics and the finest details.

Tuning with Numerous Classic Capacitors

Luxurious Materials That Push the Boundaries of Sound

The DX340MAX uses 48 nickel-chromium metal-film resistors at key points in the headphone amplifier, combined with numerous electrolytic and film capacitors for tuning. These include legendary, discontinued capacitors such as RIFA and SPRAGUE. The sophistication and texture that high-quality boutique capacitors bring are a crucial source of the elevated listening experience. These components take up a significant amount of space on the amplifier board—something only the MAX version can accommodate. The use of luxurious materials, where no expense was spared, ensures truly astonishing sound performance.

Analog + Digital Volume Controls

Custom-made 24-step attenuator

The DX340MAX features independent analog and digital volume controls, allowing for more precise adjustment. The analog volume control uses a step potentiometer, typically found only in high-end equipment. iBasso’s step potentiometer consists of 96 high-precision resistors and features a meticulously engineered mechanical design. It supports 24 volume steps, yet is only one-tenth the size of conventional step potentiometers and maintains channel imbalance within ±0.1 dB—a significant technical challenge.

A high digital volume has no effect on bit depth, and a low analog volume can be synchronized to reduce background noise. For the best listening experience, it is recommended to keep the digital volume between 90 and 100 and adjust the analog volume accordingly. At high digital volume and low analog volume, the DX340MAX truly showcases its capabilities.

Non-SRC Android 13 + Linux-based Pure Sound OS

Open System + Closed System, All-in-One

Thanks to the Android 13 system and support for installing streaming apps, you can enjoy the convenience of the Android system.

The DX340MAX bypasses Android SRC system-wide at the software level, allowing both the Mango Player app and streaming apps to utilize the “Non-SRC” features at the system level.

In addition, the DX340MAX features iBasso’s proprietary, dedicated Pure Sound system, Mango OS, which is based on a Linux platform and was developed specifically for music playback. Mango OS features extensive optimizations in music decoding and underlying algorithms, reducing CPU load and focusing exclusively on audio playback. This Pure Sound System is free from Wi-Fi or Bluetooth interference, offers low electromagnetic interference (EMI), and ensures a purer listening experience.
